Squalane vs Hyaluronic Acid: Two Ingredients Doing Two Completely Different Jobs
Squalane and hyaluronic acid show up in the same "hydrating" product category so often that most people assume they do the same thing. They don't. One is a humectant that pulls water into the skin's surface layer, and the other is an emollient that seals a lipid layer over the skin to keep that water from leaving. Using only one is why a lot of hydration routines quietly underperform.
Hyaluronic acid pulls water toward itself
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring polysaccharide already present in your skin, and its defining property is water affinity: a single gram can bind up to roughly a thousand times its weight in water under ideal conditions. Applied topically, it draws moisture from the surrounding air (in humid climates like Trinidad and Tobago) or from the deeper layers of skin (in dry conditions) into the stratum corneum. That is a humectant's whole job: pull water toward itself and hold it there.
Squalane seals what's already there
Squalane is the stabilized, shelf-safe version of squalene, a lipid your own sebaceous glands already produce as part of your skin's natural oil. Because it closely mimics your skin's existing lipids, it sits comfortably in the outer barrier layer without feeling heavy, forming a light seal that slows water evaporating back out through the stratum corneum. It doesn't add moisture. It keeps the moisture that's already there from leaving.

In a humid climate, it's tempting to skip the sealing step because the air already feels saturated, but moving air, air conditioning, and fans all pull moisture off skin regardless of ambient humidity.
