Ceramides and peptides both get filed under "anti-aging," which buries a real distinction: one repairs a structural wall, the other sends a signal to build new material. Ceramides are the wall, not a signal

Ceramides are lipids that make up roughly half of the material holding stratum corneum cells together, arranged in a brick-and-mortar structure where skin cells are the bricks and ceramides (along with cholesterol and fatty acids) are the mortar. When that ratio is disrupted, by over-cleansing, harsh actives, hard water, or heat, moisture escapes and irritants get in more easily. Ceramide-containing formulas work by directly replacing that mortar, not by telling the skin to make more of something.

Peptides send a signal instead of supplying material

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that signal fibroblasts to increase production of collagen and other structural proteins. They don't repair the barrier directly, they ask the skin to build more of its own scaffolding over time. That is a slower, more cumulative process than ceramide replacement, which works essentially as soon as it's applied.
