Why hard water traps soap on your face instead of rinsing it away
Calcium and magnesium ions bind to surfactant molecules, making them less soluble so they precipitate and stick to skin rather than rinsing cleanly off with water. That residue is a double problem: it's mildly irritating on its own, and it defeats the point of cleansing by leaving behind exactly the film you were trying to remove. Separately, hard water tends to run more alkaline, and a shift toward alkaline pH on skin's surface disrupts the acid mantle, the thin protective film that normally keeps bacteria in check and holds the barrier together.2
