Vitamin C and Retinol Aren't Incompatible, They Just Need Different Shifts
A persistent piece of skincare advice says never to combine vitamin C and retinol, on the theory that their different pH requirements cancel each other out or destabilize on the skin. Modern formulations have largely resolved the pH conflict, but there's a simpler practical reason to still keep them separate: they are suited to opposite times of day, and combining them wastes half of what each ingredient does best.
Why vitamin C belongs in the morning
Vitamin C's main job is neutralizing free radicals generated by UV and environmental exposure throughout the day, functioning as active daytime defense alongside sunscreen. Applying it at night, when there's no UV exposure to defend against, uses it for a job it isn't really needed for at that moment.
Why retinol belongs at night
Retinol increases photosensitivity while skin is adjusting, and its cell turnover and repair effects are working alongside, not against, the skin's natural nighttime repair processes. Applying it in the morning under sun exposure runs directly against both of those facts.
Our Superfruit Serum is built for that morning antioxidant role, and our Retinyl Cream is formulated for the evening repair window. The skin quiz can help you build the full split routine around both.
