The After-Beach Routine: What Saltwater and Sun Actually Do, and How to Undo It
A full day at Maracas, Store Bay, or any T&T beach puts skin through a specific, measurable stress: sustained UV exposure, saltwater, sweat, and often a swim in the sea or a nearby pool. Studies on elite swimmers show transepidermal water loss increases substantially after just two hours in water, from a baseline around 8.5 g/m2/h up to roughly 14.3 g/m2/h, remaining elevated even 30 minutes after getting out.1 A day at the beach compounds that with direct sun exposure most people underestimate because the heat feels diffused by sea breeze.
Why "rinsing off" isn't the same as restoring the barrier
A quick outdoor shower removes visible salt and sand but does nothing for the water that has already left the skin through that elevated TEWL, or for the UV-driven oxidative stress accumulated over the day. Chlorinated pool water adds a second mechanism: residual chlorine reduces the water-retaining properties of the stratum corneum directly, on top of the mechanical exposure from swimming itself.1
The actual after-beach sequence
